Discernment - Good Heaven vs Bad Heaven

We've learned that earth has a beautiful instinct: Support heaven with respect and gifts.

But here's the key question: What if you can't tell good heaven from bad heaven?

This is where discernment becomes literally life or death.

The Cancer Pattern - Biology Teaching Us

Your body right now is performing an incredible act of discernment constantly.

In a healthy body:

  • Cells (earth) support healthy DNA (heaven)
  • They execute the good instructions perfectly
  • When DNA becomes corrupted (bad heaven), the immune system identifies and kills those cells
  • The body discerns: "This is broken heaven, not good heaven. Must be destroyed."

This is your immune system working.

But what happens when discernment fails?

Cancer:

  • DNA in one cell becomes corrupted (bad heaven emerges)
  • The body fails to discern the difference between good DNA and broken DNA
  • Cells continue supporting and executing the corrupted instructions
  • The corrupted heaven spreads, using earth's instinctive support against itself
  • Eventually it destroys the whole body

Cancer is failed discernment. The body's good instinct to support heaven gets hijacked by bad heaven.

The Spiritual Parallel

This same pattern happens spiritually:

Good discernment (spiritual immune system):

  • You identify good authority (aligned with God)
  • You support it with respect and gifts
  • You identify bad authority (contradicting God)
  • You resist it and refuse to support it
  • You stay healthy and flourishing

Failed discernment (spiritual cancer):

  • You can't tell good heaven from bad heaven
  • You support corrupt authority
  • You execute harmful instructions
  • The corruption spreads
  • Eventually destroys your life, family, or society

Why Discernment Is a Critical Spiritual Gift

1 Corinthians 12:10 lists "discernment of spirits" (Norwegian: "skjelding av åndene") as a crucial spiritual gift.

Why so important?

Because earth's instinct to support heaven is GOOD, but only when paired with the ability to tell good heaven from bad heaven.

Without discernment:

  • You'll follow false teachers
  • You'll support abusive leaders
  • You'll execute harmful plans
  • You'll give your power to corruption
  • Like cancer - good instincts supporting bad direction

With discernment:

  • You recognize God's true authority
  • You resist what's counterfeit or demonic
  • You protect yourself and others
  • You build only what aligns with God
  • Your immune system keeps you healthy

Examples of Failed Discernment

Personal level - Following broken thoughts:

  • Your own mind (inner heaven) can become corrupted
  • Depression: executing thoughts that tell you to give up
  • Addiction: supporting a mental pattern that's destroying you
  • Anxiety: following fearful thoughts that lead nowhere good
  • You need discernment even about your OWN thoughts

Relationship level - Abusive authority:

  • Supporting a spouse who claims authority but is abusive
  • Following a leader who's clearly violating God's ways
  • A woman supporting a man's "vision" that's actually selfish and destructive
  • Children obeying parents who ask them to sin
  • Earth must discern: This isn't good heaven, I must resist

Societal level - Corrupt leadership:

  • Germans supporting Hitler (broken heaven claiming authority)
  • Cults where people give everything to corrupt leaders
  • Corporate employees executing clearly unethical directives
  • Citizens supporting laws that contradict God's character
  • Whole societies can fail at discernment

Church level - False teaching:

  • Following teachers who twist Scripture
  • Supporting ministries that abuse rather than build up
  • Giving resources to leaders clearly not walking with God
  • Accepting doctrine that contradicts biblical truth
  • "Many false prophets will appear" (Matthew 24:11) - discernment is essential

How to Discern Good Heaven from Bad Heaven

Good heaven (worthy of support):

Aligns with Scripture and God's character

  • Matches what the Bible actually teaches
  • Reflects God's love, justice, truth, mercy
  • Points toward Christ

Produces good fruit

  • Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control (Galatians 5:22-23)
  • People flourish under this leadership
  • Builds up rather than tears down

Explains clearly with patience and love

  • Takes time to help earth understand
  • Respects earth's reality and questions
  • Gentle in correction

Serves others, not self

  • Uses authority to help people flourish
  • Sacrificial, like Christ
  • "I came to serve, not to be served" (Mark 10:45)

Admits mistakes and repents when wrong

  • Humble, not prideful
  • Can say "I was wrong, I'm sorry"
  • Willing to adjust and learn

Points to God's glory, not its own

  • Deflects praise to God
  • "Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory" (Psalm 115:1)
  • Makes much of Christ, little of self

Bad heaven (must be resisted):

Contradicts Scripture or God's character

  • Asks you to do what God forbids
  • Reflects pride, cruelty, deception, selfishness
  • Distorts or ignores biblical truth

Produces bad fruit

  • Fear, control, manipulation, abuse, destruction
  • People wither under this leadership
  • Tears down rather than builds up

Harsh, unclear, or manipulative

  • Refuses to explain, just demands obedience
  • Uses fear and shame as tools
  • "Because I said so" without loving explanation

Serves self, not others

  • Uses authority for personal gain or pleasure
  • Exploits those under care
  • "Do as I say, not as I do"

Never admits fault, always blames others

  • Prideful, defensive
  • "It's always someone else's fault"
  • Cannot repent or change

Seeks its own glory, uses "God" as cover

  • Makes much of self, little of Christ
  • "God told me..." (but it benefits them suspiciously)
  • Demands worship or excessive loyalty

The Biblical Warnings

Scripture constantly warns us to discern:

"Test the spirits to see whether they are from God." (1 John 4:1)

  • Don't just accept every claim to authority
  • Test it against Scripture and the Spirit
  • Discern carefully

"Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves." (Matthew 7:15)

  • Bad heaven often LOOKS like good heaven at first
  • You need discernment to see through the disguise
  • Look at the fruit (next verse: "You will recognize them by their fruits")

"Do not be deceived." (1 Corinthians 6:9, Galatians 6:7, James 1:16)

  • Repeated throughout Scripture
  • Deception is a real danger
  • Stay alert, stay discerning

Elders must meet strict qualifications (1 Timothy 3)

  • Not just anyone should have authority
  • Character matters
  • The church must discern who is fit to lead

Your Spiritual Immune System

Think of discernment as your spiritual immune system:

It identifies corrupted heaven:

  • Recognizes when authority contradicts God
  • Spots false teaching
  • Senses manipulative leadership

It refuses to support bad heaven:

  • "I will not execute these instructions"
  • "I will not give my gifts to this corruption"
  • "I must resist, respectfully but firmly"

It kills off bad instructions before they spread:

  • Rejects the false teaching
  • Warns others
  • Protects the body (church, family, self)

It protects the whole system from cancer:

  • Keeps you healthy spiritually
  • Prevents corruption from spreading
  • Maintains alignment with God

The Balance - Not Too Little, Not Too Much

Too little discernment (naive earth):

  • Trusts everyone claiming authority
  • Supports everything that sounds spiritual
  • Gets exploited by bad leaders
  • Becomes host for spiritual cancer
  • "Innocent as doves" without "wise as serpents" (Matthew 10:16)

Too much suspicion (rebellious earth):

  • Rejects all authority, even good authority
  • Refuses to support any leadership
  • Becomes isolated and powerless
  • Never builds anything
  • "Wise as serpents" without "innocent as doves"

Healthy discernment (mature Christian):

  • Tests carefully using Scripture and fruit
  • Supports good heaven enthusiastically
  • Resists bad heaven firmly
  • Builds what's aligned with God
  • Both wise AND innocent - the balance Christ calls us to

How Discernment Develops

1. Know Scripture deeply

  • The Bible is your standard for testing
  • "Your word is a lamp to my feet" (Psalm 119:105)
  • The better you know God's Word, the easier you spot counterfeits

2. Walk closely with God

  • The Holy Spirit gives discernment
  • "The Spirit will guide you into all truth" (John 16:13)
  • Intimacy with God sharpens your spiritual senses

3. Look at the fruit

  • "By their fruits you will recognize them" (Matthew 7:16)
  • Does this authority produce love, joy, peace? Or fear, control, destruction?
  • Fruit doesn't lie

4. Get counsel from mature believers

  • "In the multitude of counselors there is safety" (Proverbs 11:14)
  • Don't trust only your own discernment
  • Wise Christians around you help you see clearly

5. Practice in small things

  • Discernment is like a muscle - it grows with use
  • Test teachings, test spirits, test your own thoughts
  • Learn to recognize God's voice vs other voices

Peace and Discernment Work Together

There's a crucial connection between peace and discernment that many miss.

When you're resting in Christ, that peace gives you the stability to discern clearly without falling into paranoia or fear.

From a place of peace, you're not afraid of deception because:

  • You're resting in God (not anxious or desperate)
  • The Holy Spirit lives in you (guides and protects you)
  • You're anchored in Christ (not tossed around by every voice)
  • You can calmly test and evaluate (not making fear-based decisions)

Peace enables clear discernment. When you're secure in God's love, you can see clearly because you're not frantic or grasping. You can test spirits without suspicion controlling you, and you can reject bad authority without losing your peace.

Discernment in Everyday Life

At work:

  • Your boss suggests cutting corners that might harm others or compromise integrity
  • Your discernment recognizes: "This is bad heaven (contradicts God's care for people)"
  • You respectfully refuse and appeal to higher principles or authority
  • Your spiritual immune system protected others and your own integrity

In your own mind:

  • Destructive thoughts try to pull you toward depression, anxiety, or despair
  • Your discernment recognizes: "This isn't from God, this isn't true"
  • You don't execute these thoughts - instead you rest in God's truth
  • Your immune system stopped the infection before it spread

At church:

  • You hear teaching that doesn't align with Scripture
  • Your discernment checks it carefully against God's Word
  • If it aligns: receive it gratefully and apply it
  • If it contradicts: reject it and warn others lovingly
  • Your immune system protects your faith and others'

In relationships:

  • Someone claims authority over you but their "direction" produces fear and harm
  • Your discernment tests the fruit: does this reflect God's character?
  • You recognize abusive or manipulative patterns for what they are
  • You resist firmly while maintaining your peace in God
  • Your immune system protects you from spiritual abuse

The Core Truth

Earth's instinct to support heaven is BEAUTIFUL and NECESSARY.

But without discernment, that beautiful instinct becomes deadly.

With discernment, you can:

  • Enthusiastically support good heaven (give your all to God's purposes)
  • Firmly resist bad heaven (protect yourself and others from corruption)
  • Stay healthy spiritually (immune system working)
  • Build only what glorifies God (nothing wasted on false causes)

Discernment isn't about being suspicious of everything. It's about being wise enough to recognize good heaven and support it fully, while being protected from bad heaven that would destroy you.
